The effect of the Ranitidine(Zantac^(¢ç)) in the treatment of peptic ulcer

Abstract
The therapeutic efficacy of ranitidine was evaluated in 28 patients with endoscopically diagnosed peptic ulcer. Every patient was treated with ranitidine 150mg b. i. d. for 4 weeks or 8 weeks, and after then gastroscopic evaluation for healing or not was done.
The results were as follows;
1) Of 28 outpatients, 20 were male, 8 were female, 7 male & 4 female gastric ulcer, 13 male & 4 female duodenal ulcer. Prevalent age group was over sixth decade in gastric ulcer and under sixth decade in duodenal ulcer.
2) Percentages of relief of major symptoms such as epigastralgia, pyrosis, dyspepsia, etc. were 50-70% after 1 week, 7090% after 2 weeks and 90 1000/0 after 4 weeks of treatment.
3) 9 of 11 cases (81.8%) of gastric ulcer and 14 of 17 cases (82.4%) of duodenal ulcer were completely healed up after 4 week¢¥s treatment and 1 more gastric ulcer (90.9%) & 2 more duodenal ulcer (94.1%) cases were completely healed up after 8 week¢¥s treatment.
4) Of 28 patients, any untoward side effect were not founded during 4 or 8 week¢¥s treatment.
In conclusion ranitidine appears to be effective & safe for the short term treatment of patients with peptic ulcer diseases.
